We are reminded that "the following story is based on true events", and as the film opens we get archive footage of the Nazis overpowering much of Europe and the cult of personality surrounding Adolf Hitler, who is idolized by the German masses.
We then go to "St. Radegund, Austria " as we get to know Franz and his wife and three young daughters. They live a simple life, farming the land and making ends meet as best they can.
Life is hard but good. Then one day Franz is conscripted and we go to "Enns Military Base, ", where the Austrian conscripts are required to pledge their loyalty to Hitler.
Franz refuses, and is taken prisoner To tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: this is the latest opus don't just call it a film from writer-director Terrence Malick.
His recent work has been decidedly mixed, including 's "Knight of Cups" and, even more of a head-scrtacher, 's "Song to Song" that was his worst movie ever.
First, Malick in his well-know way of free-flowing photography manages to create a bond between the characters and us, the viewers.
As we watch the seemingly idyllic yet harsh life for Franz and his family in the small Austrian village, we very much care what might or might not happen to them.
The movie's first hour is almost dream-like or as my friend with whom I saw the movie said: "it's a one hour trailer". Second, the movie sports a fabulous orchestral score, courtesy of veteran Hollywood composer James Newton Howard, that matches, or underscores, the movie's overall feel and mood perfectly.
Third, the mostly no-names ensemble cast is absolutely delightful. I admit not being familiar with the lead performers' prior work, but August Diehl as Franz and Valerie Pachner as his wife are absolute tops.
Keep your eyes out for a brief maybe 10 min. Last, but certainly not least, one cannot escape or deny that this film is incredibly timely and political, as the parallels between what happened in Nazi Germany and what is going with the current POTUS are undeniable and, frankly, scary.

Austria , Radegund , is working his land when war breaks out. Married to Franziska Fani Valerie Pachner , the couple are important members of the tight-knit rural community.
They live a simple life with the passing years marked by the arrival of the couple's three girls. Franz is called up for basic training in the German army and is away from his beloved wife and children for months.
Eventually, when France surrenders and it seems the war might end soon, he is sent back from training. With his mother and sister-in-law Resie Maria Simon , he and his wife farm the land and raise their children amid the mountains and valleys of upper Austria.
Many scenes depict cutting and gathering hay, as well as the broad Inn River. As the war goes on, Jägerstätter and the other able-bodied men in the village are called up to fight.
Their first requirement is to swear an oath of allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Despite pressure from the Mayor and his farm neighbors, who increasingly ostracize him and his family, and from the Bishop of Salzburg, Jägerstätter refuses.
Wrestling with the knowledge that his decision will mean arrest and even death, Jägerstätter finds strength in Fani's love and support.
Jägerstätter is taken to prison, first in Enns , then in Berlin and waits months for his trial. During his time in prison, he and Fani write letters to each other and give each other strength.
Fani and their daughters are victims of growing hostility in the village over her husband's decision not to fight.
Fani is eventually able to visit her husband in Berlin. After months of brutal incarceration, his case goes to trial.
He is found guilty and sentenced to death. Despite many opportunities to sign the oath of allegiance, and the promise of non-combatant work, Jägerstätter continues to stand up for his beliefs and is executed by the Third Reich in August , while his wife and three daughters survive.
Malick said A Hidden Life will have a more structured narrative than his previous works: "Lately — I keep insisting, only very lately — have I been working without a script and I've lately repented the idea.
The last picture we shot, and we're now cutting, went back to a script that was very well ordered. The film began production in Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, Germany in summer From 11 July through 19 August the production shot on location in South Tyrol.
Locations there were the church of St. In August reports emerged that some of the film's scenes were shot in the small Italian mountain village of Sappada.

View All Critic Reviews Jan 25, Devotees of famed art house director Terrence Malick will find a renewed faith in the filmmaker's often touted genius after three feature-length meditative marathons on the beauty and ennui of rich, white people amidst decadent problems.
Set in the first half of WWII, the film is based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who defied his conscription to the Third Reich and was imprisoned as a conscientious objector and traitor.
You can easily guess what happens to him as the film doesn't really make it past , so the tragedy and travesty of his situation should come as no surprise to any casual purveyors of history.
Here Malick's elliptical and naturalistic style of editing mixes with Jorg Widmers keen Emmanuel Lubezki inspired camera work to complement instead of obfuscate the subjects of the film.
This method fits the tone and flow much better than in Malick's last three outings because it lends intimacy and confrontation instead of finger-gagging you into unremitting apathy.
At conclusion, I sat in the theater until the credits ended with about five other strangers as we slowly collected ourselves and let our tears dry.
