Whilst it could be argued that House is about a desensitised world indifferent to suffering, it seems to be more about Lars von Trier and the criticisms that have been levelled against him over the years.

Although he doesn't seem willing to apologise for anything, he is more than happy to defend, attempting to use the depiction of violence so as to facilitate introspection, reflecting on the importance or lack thereof of morality and culpability in artistic creation.

House is an especially self-reflexive and somewhat self-disdainful film, which Von Trier has intimated may be his last, and if that is so, it certainly makes for a fittingly provocative and confrontational final word.

Barbara VanDenburgh. The House That Jack Built is both one of 's best films and, I can easily say, a film that I'll likely never watch again.

Richard Propes. As the film progresses into its last stretches, it proves itself to be bizarrely satisfying, recontextualizing itself into something much grander in sadness and scope.

How did you buy your ticket? The scene involving the main character's mutilation of a duckling when he was a child was done with the help of special effects, and the duckling was not harmed.

Despite this, there was considerable audience backlash toward this scene, but PETA has defended the film in a statement, praising its accurate portrayal of the link between adolescent animal abuse and psychopathy.

Animal cruelty is actually known to be a common trait among serial murderers, especially when they are young.

The Second Incident is similar to Ray Bradbury 's short story "The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl" in which the murderer is obsessed with erasing every fingerprint at the scene of the crime.

The repeated shots in which Jack holds up large cue cards while standing in an alley are a reference to Bob Dylan 's famous music video "Subterranean Homesick Blues".

The House That Jack Built was originally announced as an eight-part miniseries in September when the completed version of Nymphomaniac: Vol.

Von Trier split the filming into two parts to allow the opportunity for editing in between, something he has never done before. The House That Jack Built will make its debut out of competition at the Cannes Film, seven years after Lars von Trier 's infamous "Nazi" comments during the press conference for Melancholia resulted in his being labeled "persona non grata" and banned from the festival.

The character with red gown "S. Like this film, "The Element of Crime" also concerns a serial killer. Kirsten Dunst was approached for a role in the film, but chose not to move forward with the project.

A few times Verge says to Jack: ''Do you want me to show you the way to the next whiskey bar? This is referencing most popularly The Doors' 'Alabama Song', which in turn is a rendition of an opera song of the same name, written originally in German by Bertolt Brecht.

Lars von Trier explains the origins of this film as follows: " The House That Jack Built celebrates the idea that life is evil and soulless, which is sadly proven by the recent rise of the Homo trumpus - the rat king.

The film has caused some controversy with the MPAA due to a November 28th screening of the unrated version at the Cannes Film Festival that is closely before the R-rated release.

IFC Films is now facing sanctions over the screening for failing to obtain the appropriate waiver and a possible revocation of the R-rating.

It has been questioned whether this film could be the third part in Lars von Trier 's USA trilogy, which included Dogville and Manderlay but was never finished.

Originally, Washington was announced as the trilogy's third installment, but as of , it has not yet entered production.

Coming across like a slightly more unhinged Jordan B. Peterson , Jack has no time for debates concerning gender fluidity or sexual misconduct, even going so far as to suggest that women are more cooperative murder victims because they're "easier to work with.

Aside from the aforementioned duckling scene, by far the most disturbing scene is the 4th Incident.

Here, we are introduced to Jacqueline an excellent Riley Keough , whom Jack has been dating for a while. What is most distressing about the scene is not how Jack kills her although it's far and away the most graphic death in the film , but what precedes her murder, as Jack mercilessly verbally belittles her, calling her by the nickname he has given her, "Simple", because he believes she is so unintelligent.

He then takes great delight in revealing to her that he is Mr Sophistication, suggesting that she scream; the futility of which he demonstrates by shouting out an open window, "no one will help you.

As unsettling as this scene is, the film can also be extremely funny, with the entire 2nd Incident playing out like an extended Key and Peele sketch.

Trying to gain entry to a woman's Siobhan Fallon Hogan house, Jack does a hilariously bad impression of a policeman, explaining, "I don't have my badge with me because I'm getting a promotion", and then cheerfully waving to a passing driver as if they are best friends.

Once inside, he only manages to kill his victim at the third attempt, and then, having left the house, his OCD compels him to return three times to check for blood splatters in such places as behind a picture on the wall and under the leg of a chair.

Finally, to get away from the cops that have shown up, he ties the body to the back of his van, pulling it along the road, and leaving a blood trail from the house to his industrial freezer, only for it to start raining and erase the blood.

I'd be remiss here if I didn't mention the extraordinarily beautiful epilogue, wherein Jack and Verge descend to hell "Katabasis" is the Ancient Greek word for "descent".

However, the film is far from perfect. For starters, it can be incredibly self-indulgent. It's also unnecessarily long, and there are stretches which are extremely tedious.

I'm also not sure that a clip reel of von Trier's own films was the wisest choice. Additionally, the female characters, by the very nature of the narrative structure, are empty shells who exist only to be murdered.

Some of the digressions concerning art and its relationship to love and hate are also perhaps intentionally juvenile and intellectually vapid.

View All Critic Reviews Mar 08, Yeah, I get what von Trier is getting at here and I suppose I can appreciate Matt Dillon's admittedly fantastic performance.

However, the movie is often deeply unpleasant and also intermittently boring. Alec B Super Reviewer. Feb 03, I think I'm done with him and his films.

The man has obvious talent but is often his own worst enemy, given to self-destructive impulses and excessive cruelty meant to be daring and challenging but is mostly perfunctory.

The House That Jack Built is distasteful by design but also heavy-handed, obvious, and vacuous to a fault.

Jack Matt Dillon narrates his life as an American serial killer in the s and 80s. He's traveling through the afterlife with the help of Verge Bruno Ganz , a supernatural guide and easy listener.

Jack divides his murderous exploits into a series of five key incidents: Lady 1 Uma Thurman being picked up looking for car help; Lady 2 Siobhan Fallen Hogan as a suspicious neighbor answering the door; Lady 3 Sofie Grabol as a mother with kids who is taken hunting and then literally hunted; Simple Riley Keough , the one who tried to get away; and finally the last scenario where Jack tried to kill multiple men with a single "full metal jacket" bullet.

Along the way, Jack talks about the frustrations of his boyhood and adulthood, living with OCD, and the implications of his life's legacy.

It's not that a serial killer film, whether it be a psychological examination or gnarly genre thrill ride, can be without artistic merit, but von Trier settles for empty provocations.

He's using the nature of the movie serial killer to essentially terrorize the audience and make them question what entertainment value they ever saw in these kinds of figures and stories, or von Trier's films at that.

I was expecting an unsettling experience given the nature of the subject and the reputation of the filmmaker, but what made the situation all the more oppressive and disquieting is how obvious and heavy-handed everything comes across.

The central metaphor could not be any more transparent for any person familiar with von Trier's back catalogue of punishing feature films. Jack views himself as an artist, specifically an architect, and his art is via terrorizing women for personal satisfaction.

In case you needed it further spelled out, Jack is von Trier, a filmmaker who makes movie after movie featuring a central heroine being abused and exploited with no cosmic justice.

A von Trier film experience is all about unchecked suffering and systemic abuse from the patriarchy. Sometimes this can be a condemnation that elicits strong emotional responses like a Dancer in the Dark, and other times it feels like von Trier wallowing in flip nihilism, like the conclusion of his two-part Nymphomaniac opus that undid the preceding four hours.

Jack kills women for his art; von Trier tortures women for his art. There you go. With that central metaphor established, you'd expect the movie to become an introspective and excoriating probe into von Trier as a notorious filmmaker who often shocks and appalls.

Oh how wrong you would be. The House That Jack Built is the same stale slog only with a slight meta twist.

Although not easily noticeable, Korean cinema icon Ji-Tae Yoo has a role in this film. Jack is an engineer who sees himself as an architect.

He commits a series of murders in the Pacific Northwest. Matt Dillon also played a character in There's Something About Mary who was pretending to be an architect and was accused of being a serial murderer who operated in the states of Utah and Washington Pacific Northwest.

In both films there is a theme regarding the decomposition of bodies. The strange relationship and voyage of Jack and his guide Verge are not only reminiscent of Dante Alighieri 's "La Divina Commedia" The Divine Comedy , but it also features elements from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 's "Faust", where the characters Mephistopheles and Faust travel through the world beyond the laws of physics and investigate humanity.

The casting of Bruno Ganz also points to this interpretation, because he's one of the most celebrated stage performers of "Faust" in theatre history.

In one sequence of the film Jack even discusses Goethe's life, but doesn't mention his "Faust". Jack cutting off Simple's breasts is reminiscent of how Jack the Ripper does the same to a prostitute in Alan Moore 's graphic novelle 'From Hell'.

The policeman not believing her story because he thinks she is drunk is somewhat similar to one of Jeffrey Dahmer 's victims, who managed to escape his apartment in an intoxicated state, and was returned to Dahmer by the police.

Other similarities to serial killers include faking an injury in order to appear harmless like Ted Bundy , and keeping bodies in a freezer like Richard Kuklinski.

II It's a meta-commentary about his own life as an artist, but framed as an illustration of Jack's general reflections on art.

Von Trier also said, that this might be his last feature film, so it can also be seen as a visual summation of his work.

The House That Jack Built often makes references to German history, sometimes very obvious by showing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Adolf Hitler , but also in more subtle and disturbing ways by talking about the 'artistry' involved in engineering the infamous German WWII Stuka dive bomber and Nazi architect Albert Speer 's work.

Jack's final 'art project' in the film involves shooting multiple people with only one bullet and Jack explains, that he got inspired by reading about German soldiers in WWII at the eastern front, who ran out of bullets.

The film also mentions explicitly the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald and its strange relationship to Goethe. The sequence where Jack sadistically kills a whole family on a hunting ground in the forest also strongly evokes a German WWII extermination camp.

The final part of the film depicts the strange voyage of Jack and his guide Verge through the underworld in a similar way to Dante Alighieri 's famous 14th century Italian poem "La Divina Commedia" The Divine Comedy , where Dante himself is guided through Hell 'Inferno' and eventually to God by the character Virgil.

In one scene, Verge clearly identifies himself as the author of the epic "Aeneid", which was written by the Roman poet Virgil in real-life.

In the Divine Comedy, Dante enters the vestibule of the underworld through the Gates of Hell, symbolized by the door in the freezer that Jack only manages to open near the end to find Verge on the other side.

Jack and Verge can then be seen crossing the river of wailing in a classic depiction of Dante and Virgil doing the same.

Damit muss man heute leider rechnen.
