Written by garykmcd. Edgar This is a particular kind of movie--the based on fact biopic--done with great attention to period accuracy. If that's what's important, getting a bit of American history into a vivid big screen format, then this works pretty well.
On top of that, Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent, very professional. But "J. Edgar" not a terrific movie. If a movie is meant to be gripping and moving and beautiful and fun and all those things, this is none of those.
It isn't boring or tepid or clumsy or insulting--but not being those things isn't exactly a compliment. And the reasons for this are clear.
Mainly there's the format. Edgar Hoover, literally telling the story to a typist. This is a dry and painful way of any kind of drama. It's even a boring way to teach a class, and sometimes you get the feeling we're being "taught" things about our history we need to know.
Be careful, if you watch only half the movie, you'll be filled with misconceptions that the movie itself corrects, in the last few moments during a final important conversation.
That problem of course is a new kind of "unreliable narrator," since the story is being told by the protagonist himself. And no one is very honest, truly, in an autobiography.
In a way that makes the movie the most interesting it can be. I'm also not sure what the director and writer really feel about Hoover's sexual orientation, at least as it applied to his doing his job.
There are some familiar Eastwood slants on content that might irk a few of you familiar with his politics. For example, he makes very public his appreciation for civil rights and equality, but in a way that's so showy you begin to suspect the motivation that he believes what he preaches but he also wants you to like him for it.
But then he also has little to say about the heavy handed FBI and pre-FBI days when lots of innocent people got followed and railroaded and jailed and worse.
The mood is set that in those old days things were different and we really needed a megalomaniac at the FBI to keep this darned country safe from the Commies.
Something like that. As a drama, which is maybe the secondary consideration, the plot moves between a present day s crisis between the Kennedy and Nixon years and the early days.
It flips back and forth a lot too much for me and keeps DiCaprio's narration flowing right through a lot of it in part to hold it together.
The result is fragmented as a story, and stilted as a dramatic flow. Just a heads up on the format and the flow. Again, if it's content you want, and you can enjoy the way it gets cobbled together, there's a lot of stuff here to sort out.

Hoover apologizes and begs him to stay, but Tolson threatens to end their friendship if Hoover talks about another woman again.
After Tolson leaves, Hoover says that he loves him, too. Years later, Hoover feels his strength begin to decline, while Tolson suffers a stroke.
Hoover tries to blackmail Martin Luther King, Jr. King disregards this and accepts the prize. Hoover tells Gandy to destroy his secret files after his death in order to prevent President Richard Nixon from possessing them.
He visits Tolson, who urges him to retire. Hoover refuses, claiming that Nixon is going to destroy the bureau he has created. Tolson accuses Hoover of having exaggerated his involvement with key events of the Bureau.
Moments later, Hoover tells Tolson that he needed Tolson more than he ever needed anyone else. He holds Tolson's hand, kisses his forehead, and leaves.
Hoover returns home from work, obviously weakened. Shortly after Hoover goes upstairs, his housekeeper calls Tolson, who goes to the house and finds Hoover dead next to his bed.
A grief-stricken Tolson covers his friend's body. Nixon gives a memorial speech on television for Hoover, while several members of his staff enter Hoover's office and search through the cabinets and drawers in search of his rumored "confidential" files, but find nothing.
In the last scene, Gandy destroys stacks of files. Gunner Wright and David A. Cooper have cameos as future presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower [5] and Franklin D.
Roosevelt , respectively, and are seen in the group of onlookers who arrive following the bombing at A.
Mitchell Palmer's house. Charlize Theron , who was originally slated to play Helen Gandy, dropped out of the project to do Snow White and the Huntsman , and Eastwood considered Amy Adams before finally selecting Naomi Watts as Theron's replacement.

Edgar never rises above. Edgar is so shapeless and turgid and ham-handed, so rich in bad lines and worse readings.
In an interview on All Things Considered , Yale University history professor Beverly Gage, who is writing a biography of Hoover, stated that the film accurately conveys that Hoover came to the FBI as a reformer seeking "to clean it up, to professionalize it," and to introduce scientific methods to its investigation, eventually including such practices as fingerprinting and bloodtyping.
She praises DiCaprio for conveying the tempo of Hoover's speech. However, she notes that the film's central narrative device in which Hoover dictates his memoirs to FBI agents chosen as writers, is fictitious: "He didn't ever have the sort of formal situation that you see in the movie where he was dictating a memoir to a series of young agents, and that that is the official record of the FBI.

The story content is almost boring in a sense when I really think about it, there are tons of dull parts. This is the kind of film I can appreciate, but would not watch again.

Eastwood and Shane Black are clear about Hoover as a person, and as an American icon - he was driven, mad, a repressed homosexual, who used his office to glorify himself and wield incredible power for an unelected figure.
And yet He also contributed greatly to the modernisation of police work imagine the CSI without Hoover , and championed the use of real evidence in criminal proscecutions.
I found it a more truthful portrait than any other, as no villain sees himself as evil, but as good. DeCaprio is excellent throughtout the film.
He plays Hoover at all stages of his worklife, and the make up on him is pretty good. It is during his rise that DeCaprio shines through as the quality performer.
It may sound odd, but he has blossomed into a great actor, as De Niro predicted, with excellent performances in Scorsese's films and so many others.
His baby face may still be there, but he is a formidable actor; along with Day Lewis, one of the very best of his generation. The convoluted nature of the storytelling is intelligent, but sometimes undermines the force of the film.
It is difficult to find the governing idea - that one man's life, no matter how flawed, can still be great?
That one man's flaws can overwhelm whatever good a man does? This did not make the film a waste of time, it made it interesting.
