I knew what I was going to paint during quiet time that day. But oh the colors. My daughter saw a balloon animal kit at the grocery store this week and I had to have it.
We spent that afternoon making different things with the balloons, addicting a little bit actually. Then, after a few dogs I got the proportions right and stashed one in my studio.
This guy has no bad side. Some objects feel endless in their possibilities. Also, this canvas was two failed paintings before it became this one — hence the crazy textured background.
My family and I went to the pumpkin patch at the nursery this weekend and I found inspiration everywhere. This guy has so much personality I like him from every angle.
Excited to play with it a bit more. Also a little more pleased with my painterly strokes in this one, maybe I should keep it simple more often.
Chameleons make the coolest shapes — up there with hippos and flamingos. Something I tried with his shadowy body was to paint the whole dark side watered down so the pink ground glowed through.
I remember seeing that in a portrait ages ago in the shadow under the chin — the shadow was painted so transparent it made the coolest effect.
My kids are really getting into eating oranges — we never have them except for cocktails around here.
But once I started cutting them up they were mesmerizing. So beautiful. I spent the morning thinking I would be painting a chameleon at studio time — but when I sat down a llama reference I saved spoke to me more.
So I went with it. Originally I had the horizontal line and I was going to do dark brown on the bottom, but I was afraid the llama on the left would disappear into the darkness.
Hence, the three weird colors. I always wanted lime green though. I did a honey comb image search on Pixabay after watching an episode of Curious George with my kiddos about honey comb.
The images were already so beautiful and I could picture all the places I was going to emphasize the color. This painting is a mash up of two images I found.
I loved the red-purples in the one but the shapes of the bees in the other — I also added more bees because I zoomed into the image so far they looked lonely.
I remember seeing a beehive painting by Duane Keiser — he kept it nice and loose so you could barely make out the bees. I felt like I could hear them buzzing.
Thanks for all the support! And you should know, we made pumpkin muffins after quiet time was over. I think that second balloon is my favorite in the whole painting this is where the magic starts happening.
I love leaving little pink bits popping through all over the canvas. Pink is fun.

I love what happened! In my head the brushstrokes were a lot bigger and bolder, like one stroke per petal — which I can imagine doing with the house paint, but the acrylics and the different brushes require a different approach.
Today I was wiped, and thought I had already decided I would take the day off. But then when quiet time came around I threw these guys together on the table to just take some reference photos to play with in Artrage a digital painting app later.
The fine acrylics gave me some bright new colors for these gems, the house paint softens it up with the chalky effect, which I like. But it was refreshing to see them stay so bold.
I wanted to add more bows to the mix for the release of these minis next week — but I wanted to mix it up somehow, so I started playing with color.

I just love the shapes, and juicy looking glass, and colors. A very patient collector who was waiting for a peony painting this size all summer snatched this one right up — and I was thinking of her when I pulled the canvas out to paint.
So glad it worked out. It was floating around in my head today and when I finally sat down to paint it, it all just felt so good.
I painted it through crying from my 1 year old and stopping to comfort her, and interruptions from my 4 year old with pencil sharpener spills, but alas- I finished it and I love it.
