It created a formula that all its successors would follow. That was to pick the biggest hits from the artist and match them to some of the main points from their lives.
Of course, you had to have great music to make that work and Ray Charles had some of the greatest Soul and RnB tunes ever made. Jamie Foxx as Charles also turned in an amazing performance that made everything work.
The flashbacks and dreams focused upon how Charles became blind and how his mother inspired him and instilled in him a work ethic that would serve him throughout his life.
They also took some liberties with his life which Hollywood always does such as adding Charles being haunted by the death of his little brother when he was a kid.
There were also all kinds of people that tried to profit off his art. His music was also just as important and that was delivered by concert and studio scenes.
It was so good that it led to a revival of his album sales. Together this rich mix of tunes and his made Ray a must see. I think this film captures a great impression of its time and the seemingly inane prejudices that the disabled deal with to this day.
What I find fascinating and eye-opening, is the series of events leading up to what we know will be his downfall. He had talent, charisma, the love of his wife and everything a person could want, minus the ability to see.
Yet, he throws it all away for drugs and loose women. You find yourself not wanting to trade places with this person for a second, which seems to be the case for nearly all of Hollywood.
They do the opposite of what is in the best interest of their dignity and family and oppose traditional, moral values.
Specifically, Ray knows exactly what will happen if he continues to do drugs and if he continues to be unloyal to his family.
He knows this because these were the values he was raised with and he had first-hand experience being neglected by his own father. It leaves you feeling no pity for him.
It's all the more powerful when he breaks free of the hold this lifestyle has upon him. This film is tragic, beautiful and worth watching. A true genius at channeling Ray.
This movie is inspirational at the core and has a strong message against drug addiction. The women who acted and sang in this movie did a fine job as well.
What voices! I saw this movie in the theatre and it was both amazing and startling. I grew up in the 50's to Ray's music on the radio, I always loved his music but I had no idea about the life he lived.
But as a musician I enjoy this movie, Jamie plays all the piano parts, but that's really Ray Charles you hear singing. You hear samples of his music over his entire career.
Jamie has him down, I was very familiar with Ray's mannerisms and stage presence and it's easy to forget that isn't really Ray playing himself in the movie.
But this isn't a family movie.
