The brutality and cruelty of British Colonel Reginald Dyer is staggering, as was his callousness in the inquiries afterwards - and there is no exaggeration in the film. External Sites. Once in a long while a motion picture so eloquently expressive and technically exquisite comes along that one is tempted to hail it as being near perfect.

Variety Staff. Attenborough's work lacks even the undercurrent of personality that David Lean brought to his films: the film has no flavor but that of the standard Hollywood hagiography.

Dave Kehr. Kingsley's performance is central to the film's triumph - perhaps surpassing the rest of the technical and artistic values.

Mike Massie. The film is triumphantly not a deification, but it is necessarily a simplification, and suffers from some of those disadvantages But the embattled spirit of respect for human dignity and the need for mutual tolerance flow clearly through the film.

Andrew Robinson. This is a film that provokes healthy doubt even as it pays stirring obeisance to sainthood.

Dedicated to the concept of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, including the influential Lord Irwin John Gielgud , but eventually he and his cause become internationally renowned, and his gatherings of passive protest move India towards independence.

I say this because Gandhi was from London and he lived a pleasant life until he traveled to South Africa where it all begins, after he learned that people of his kind no matter how rich you can be, you are not allowed to do thing that white people do.

He decided to live like his people, and he kept it that way, for each city or country he traveled he adopt to their system.

Same as in the world religion book ch. After a long period of intense fasting he set out for the river and overheard a music teacher explaining to his student about instrument.

Those words brought him to realize the understanding and liberation of suffering this was the principal of the middle way which was fundamental in Buddhism.

Siddharth Gautama was a mere man, not a supernatural being, not a god, he was an extraordinary man who underwent an extraordinary experience.

In my own understanding this movie has a lot of racial slurs in it. People of his kind were not permitted to ride first class even though he told them who he was and how he got the ticket, they told him that in South Africa there are no brown attorney.

Passive resistance only works with a government that has a conscience. Even before the US has been facing an empire within itself that has none.

Corporations with more privilege than persons. The military industrial complex feeding on the youth, feeding on the taxes of all and giving only pain to the world.

What is left for the citizen with a conscience to do? One must separate the myth from the man. Gandhi did take a solemn vow of chastity, but he spent nights in bed with naked young women to 'prove' that vow was still holding up.

Now I don't care what kind of guru you call yourself, but if the vow is still working, you don't need to test it with sweet, hot, naked temptations.

I gotta wonder what his wife thought of that. He was instrumental in holding back the Indian commitment to WW2 until enough native Indians were killed by the Japanese to assure their support regardless of the British involvement.

This made it clear who's war they were fighting and who's freedom they were fighting for. See all reviews.

Top reviews from other countries. I got this DVD for my relative as it is one of her best films. Ben Kingsley, a well known talented and respectable actor portrays Gandhi very well and this classic film that won 8 Academy Awards.

It is based on the true story of Mahatma Gandhi, who fought against racial inequality and Indian Independence from the then British Empire.

Unless most national leaders who used violence, Gandhi used peaceful methods of civil disobedience forcing the oppressive British imperial regime their true colours and other events that eventually lead from to the birth of India.

It begins with Gandhi's youth as a law student to ends as him as the inspirational spirit leader of the Congress Party that helped bring Indian Independence.

Although there had been much suffering and tensions between Muslim and Hindu fanatics, the latter of one who would eventually assassinate him, Gandhi and his peaceful methods remains to be legendary and were probably the inspiration of other peaceful freedom and racial equality leaders such as Martin Luther King.

His DVD has not have any extras but the movies is nicely restored and remastered with superior sound effects and picture quality. The storyline is well structured and made as close to the true story as possible and this together with great people in the film industry makes this one of the best movies of all time.

Brilliant portrayals of the leading characters in the struggle for independence. Gandhi's background as a lawyer, and his experience in South Africa are sometimes overlooked but this film helps understand his character.

Nehru and Jinnah are nicely played. The real scale of the violence that accompanied partition is rather glossed over. One person found this helpful.

Leaving aside the obvious irony of such a lavish account of the life of a man who delighted above all things in simplicity, this is still a great film.

Gandhi still has much to teach us, and for me the great moments of this film are his utterances which are inevitably concise, plain and often very witty.

Granted it would be difficult to make a bad film about such a great man, this film still does better than that and is a classic in its own right and a great watch.

Great performances, beautifully shot, compelling story. Educational, informative, and thought provoking. Probably Kingsley's most memorable role and arguably Attenborough's greatest film.

Shankar's music as well as many westerns I was only 8 years old and lucky to have bigger broyhers who introduced tome the best british rock bands especially the so called symphonic or progresive Richard Attenborough's epic film of the life of the man whose policy of active passive resistance against the British helped lead India to gain its independence is a big epic in the grand tradition, beautifully crafted and stands alone in his canon as a director in that it has a genuine sense of vision.

Aside from its beautifully framed Scope composition, it is full of striking visual moments from waves of protesters passively lining up to be beaten in a 'raid' on a salt factory to the shot of the solitary Gandhi standing at the well in Amritsar after a massacre there.

The crowd scenes are plentiful and truly massive and on a scale we are unlikely to ever see again, yet the focus is always on the man and what he stood for.

Much of the credit for this goes to John Briley's excellent screenplay. Well constructed and filled with memorable scenes, it condenses an extraordinary life with clarity and pace and avoiding the pitiful cliche of Chaplin.

Kingsley's performance is one of the miracles of epic cinema, a performance large enough to hold its own against thousands of extras but layered enough to make Gandhi a credibly human figure.

This gives the film the real sense of a journey through Gandhi's life, from his initial vanity and failures as a public speaker to a man who became the spiritual leader of his country with charisma, wisdom and wit.

A not entirely uncritical portrait, there are inconvenient aspects of his life that are glossed over, but as an inspirational epic it has few equals.

Of the top-billed cast Candice Bergen never really registers, Trevor Howard and John Mills are hardly there long enough to notice with only Edward Fox, in one of his last restrained performances, John Gielgud and Martin Sheen standing out.

The really impressive work is to be found further down the credits; Ian Charleson's missionary, Roshan Seth's Neru and a well-chosen roster of well-known faces in supporting roles.

And for once these really are supporting roles, adding to the portrait of the central character rather than detracting from it with scene-stealing.

Despite the critical backlash it suffered not helped by Kingsley's recent, significantly less than humble behavior , it is an impressive, sometimes moving film that was worth the price of admission in the cinema and is worth adding to your collection.

All passion seemingly spent, Attenborough wouldn't make another halfway decent film until Shadowlands more than a decade later, but Gandhi is something of a masterpiece.

Director Richard Attenborough captures the kind essence, gentle nature, peaceful attitude, and righteous cause of Mahatma Gandhi. Sir Ben Kingsley is a revelation as the thoughtful man Gandhi.

He absolutely captivates and engages you while he is on screen. Gandhi is great for his unification of India's people and his succeeding in gaining India's independence from British Imperialism.

Gandhi the film triumphs for depicting Gandhi's struggle for this cause. Gandhi is a fairly comprehensive look at the late 's and early 's Indian political climate.

In watching Gandhi, you will, undoubtedly, gain historical knowledge and social perspective of the time period.

Musically, Attenborough enlisted the greatest sitar player of all time, Ravi Shankar, to score Gandi.

His beautiful and emotional sitar ragas are a delight to hear throughout the movie. Shankar's scoring is a boon to the film's authenticity and atmosphere alike.

I love how Shankar fills the empty air with sweet and endearing Indian classical music played on his steadfast sitar.

Shankar's score is the perfect complement to Gandhi's visuals. Furthermore, the cast, cinematography, score, and direction all yield stellar results for Gandhi.

It is as classic as any biopic that has ever been filmed. All the praise for Kingsley is well earned. I was in the video movie business for years.

I've seen all the movies that were in the stores and them some. Needless to say I got burned out on movies except for some that are exceptional.

Gandhi is one that I can watch over and over and never get tired of. For me its got everything I look for in a film, history, great acting, and a great story.

I've been streaming this for years on a couple of video streaming on demand sites. Its not always included in the free stream libraries so I broke down and bought a new copy.

That and I disconnected from all my video streaming stores again. Its funny because I must have handled 's of these in VHS but never kept one. This movie relates to World Religions in so many ways.

For instance, the four noble truths which is the central teachings of Buddhism; according to this philosophy to live is to suffer.

Suffering is caused by desire. Suffering can be ended. An eightfold path can end suffering and lead one to nirvana liberation truths which was the main purpose for why Gandhi did what he did in this movie.

Gandhi is a representation of the gods Rama. Just like Rama, Gandhi had a wife who followed him everywhere he went and obeyed him.

Gandhi was an astute political campaigner who fought for Indian independence from British rule and for the rights of the Indian poor.

Rama has a high moral standard along with his wife Sita, they are a picture of purity and marital devotion. Rama is the best of upholder of Dharma, the master of the world Ramayana, Rama one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, the embodiment of chivalry and virtue.

Rama or Ram, also known as Ramachandra, is a major deity of Hinduism. And it teaches us how a man can ruin himself for his own follies and unholy ambitions.

This movie also relates a little bit to Siddharth Gautama.
