I have very dark taste when it comes to movies, and have always been a big fan of horror movies. I'm sure that many of you stumbled upon this movie the same way I did, after becoming intrigued by french extremity films.

On the other hand if you're like me, and you are, I'd urge you TO watch this. It's the best I've seen so far in the genre, and I think it has a bit more of an actual story behind it.

There was a clear idea on the direction in this movie rather than simply taking an over-used plot and filling it with as much violence as possible.

I found the plot itself to be rather original and the acting to be superb. There's definitely plot twists at the beginning that will leave you suprised, and for me, by halfway through I realized I was watching something else entirely than what I originally thought I was watching, if that makes sense.

I hate that this movie gets so much criticism for the violence, when in my opinion, the high level of violence is necessary to make the idea work.

The only thing that I found lacking was the character development of Anna, I would've liked to know more about her.

They did a great job with Lucie, and you really begin to have a real emotional response to Lucie, where as I felt that was lacking with Anna's character.

All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. If you're looking for a top of the line horror film, especially if you're into french extremity films', you will find this movie to be a real treat.

What the hell did I just see? No doubt for some viewers, this movie is only a heftier budget and a hair's breath away from being a gruesome all-out revenge-themed shocksploitation flick.

For others, who can stomach their way through it as I barely did in the interest of full disclosure I did hit the 10 second skip button about a handful of times -- not for gore, but for sheer brutality , it opens up seriously uncomfortable psychological and philosophical cans of worms ranging from transcendentalism and metaphysics to parapsychology i.

It's seemingly a secular evalution of humanity, almost to the point of nihilism, so don't let the title which has marginally religious overtones fool you.

If I'd stopped about a third of the way through the film, which I seriously considered, I'd likely have given Martyrs 2 stars based on the ostensible randomness of the violence.

However, to the credit of the director and Morjana Alaoui, as Anna the main character, I was invested enough in her outcome to continue the descent.

Five minutes after the screen faded to black, I was tempted to give it 3 stars. It was okay. It was uncomfortable to the extreme, but intelligently complex in nature; still, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone.

Now, as time has passed, I'm glad I waited to share my thoughts and finally decide on a rating of 4 stars because I just cannot stop thinking about this movie.

I will recommend it to fellow film lovers. Not only to pose the question, "What the hell!? Finally, what is Martyrs?

It isn't nightmare material, oh that it were that simple. Is this horror? Horrific, yes. Horror, no. A Thriller? It certainly is not thrilling to watch -- there's suspense galore and tension in spades, but unlike most true thrillers, there is no catharsis.

Martyrs is the sort of critical film that may leave you with more questions than it answers, but in the opinion of this viewer, they are very hefty, significant questions Or, who knows, maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

In time, a young girl Anna befriends her and dons the role of a supportive and caring figure. The two are inseparable and Anna is the only human Lucie appears to wholeheartedly trust.

Though Lucie believes she killed her tormentors, she remains haunted by a fiendish creature that inflicts brutal wounds on her body. Anna has been warned for years by her mother with whom she barely has a connection to stay away from Lucie and she soon finds a horrific reason why she might have been better off without Lucie.

Martyrs is a great psychological exploration of the horrors of childhood abuse, torture and trauma. We often watch effed up movies with torture and physical violence.

But the scenes of violence towards Anna without the assistance of much gore are as brutal as they get. When she is punched, you feel it in your gut.

The cult of rich old folks sadistically willing to sacrifice young women in their quest to understand what lies close ahead for them, also leaves you disgusted, which is a credit to the narrative skills of Director Pascal Laugier.
