Salvador Dali arrives at the university; 18 years old and determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university's social elite - Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunel.
Salvador is absorbed into their youthfully decadent group and for a time Salvador, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid.
However as time passes, Salvador feels and increasingly strong pull towards the charismatic Federico - who is himself oblivious of the attentions he is getting from his beautiful writer friend, Magdalena.
In the face of his friends' preoccupations - and Federico's growing renown as a poet - Luis sets off for Paris in search of his own artistic success.
Federico and Salvador spend the holiday in the sea-side town of Cadaques. Both the idyllic surroundings and the warmth of the Dali family sweep Federico off his feet.
Salvador and Frederico draw closer, sharing their deepest beliefs, inspirations and secrets, convinced that they have found a kind of love not dreamed of by others.

George Palathingal. The drawcard of Robert ''Twilight'' Pattinson as Dali is a mixed blessing for the filmmakers, given how ill-at-ease he is in the role.
Javier Beltran, as Garcia Lorca, cast as the heroic centre of the film, cuts a more confident figure. Philippa Hawker.
Steven Rea. Beltran, for his part, makes a solidly believable Garcia Lorca. The problem is with the man with whom he's obsessed.
In Pattinson's performance, we never see what Garcia Lorca sees in Dali. Michael O'Sullivan. Little Ashes is stylish enough to beguile and bold enough to provoke, but it's not bright enough to illuminate.
Joe Williams. Matthew McNulty is commanding as Bunuel, but the sensitive Javier Beltran consistently steals the show as the tormented Lorca.
Kelly Jane Torrance. A snapshot of an insight into the life of Salvador Dali, one of the most complex artists in history and it intensifies rather than satisfies our curiosity about him.
Andrew L. John A. Beltran tries to give this flimsy nonsense some weight, but Brits McNulty and Pattinson's attempts at a Spanish accent are woeful.
Jeff Vice. It's not even worth it for Robert Pattinson, who is shown in the movie, nearly fully naked, with his privates tucked between his legs, but everything else showing.
