In the fall of DeMille suffered two more theatrical disappointments. On November 23, , Lasky proposed that their company make a film version of The Squaw Man , a long-running stage hit.
He came away confident that he could direct better than the filmmakers he observed. Legend has it that DeMille wanted to shoot his Western in Arizona but was prevented from doing so by a range war, snow, or rain.
