Newspaper photographer Sarah is far advanced in pregnancy, but depressed nonetheless, as her husband was killed in a car crash some months ago.
She is about to spend a lonely Christmas Eve at home, when a black clad woman threatens her. Sarah calls the police, who can find no trace of the female intruder.
The cops leave and Sarah goes to sleep. Her nightmare is only just beginning, as the black clad intruder returns, hell bent to cut Sarah's baby out of her womb I will not go into more detail here, but only assure you that it is highly unlikely that you will get to watch an equally gory and disturbing film anytime soon.
The movie is sooo sick it beggars belief. And I am an avid fan of horror and gore, of extreme movies of all kind. The pregnancy of Sarah adds enormous to the unpleasantness.
We even get to see the agony of the fetus in the womb! I have not seen something like that before! And rarely have I seen such insane bloodshed in a film INSIDE is no cheapo direct-to-video trash, where rivers of blood should make up for basement production values and gross splatter special effects are laughable due to lack of funds.
No way. Beatrice DALLE who plays the vicous killer is an accomplished actress with starring credits in lots of arthouse movies.
As for the final plot twist and the female killer's identity and motivation I won't give it away, so don't worry! I have to say that it did not really surprise me and I am sure that most viewers will expect something of its kind.
Cinematography and score are exceptional and add enormous to the grim athmosphere. The close quarters are very cleverly utilized for maximum shock effect. INSIDE also has some political subtext if you will , as there are references to the recent mass riots; the cops who return to Sarah's house to check on her, come with an arrested rioter in tow.
As for special features there is the trailer, which sells the film well, and a making-of. The latter runs about 50 minutes or so.
I found it very interesting. Much attention is given to the special effects and how they were accomplished. This great terror movie comes with the highest recommendation.

I am a long-time fan of horror movies, from many years ago beginning seriously with The Exorcist in the early 70's, I had been weaned from even longer ago with all the various incarnations of the highly un-frightening Hammer films in the late 60's.
After hundreds of American teen slashers a la Friday the 13th, A Nightmare On Elm Street, countless backwood cannibals, zombie apocalypses, I discovered two films, both French, that went to a new level of horror.
One is Martyrs, that operates on a few different levels which lift it above simple horror, though many definitely only "see" that face value violence.
That's a shame for them, because it has depth and breadth more than all that. The other was "Frontiers", which has no such metaphysical levels, but it has violence and bad taste that all in all make it the "nastiest" film I've seen, I wrote a review to say so.
Now I have watched "Inside" which also has legendary notoriety, it's a shame knowing the main storyline and knowing how it ends, but to my delight there were parts of the plot I did not know of, and as a result I think I can crown the film with a different accolade.
Not as broadly offensive and shocking as Frontiers, nor is it up to Martyrs' deeper messages, but I think I can say that "Inside" takes the award for the bloodiest film I've witnessed.
Once the bloodflow begins, which is not too far in, it comes in buckets, some very gruesome scenes indeed. Despite the spoiler bits I knew about, I loved it, it exceeded expectations due to the extra blood and brutality that I didn't have warning of.
And the expectations were high already. Very horrific horror, but don't embark on the journey unless you have a cast-iron stomach.
If you can handle it, it's a treat. I won't go into the story of this superb French shocker as most people on here already have done, but if you like a movie that's tense, disturbing and gory as hell, then you need to see this.
It knocks the spots off of anything Hollywood has had to offer in recent years. Just a word of note. The uk region 2 version is only available in French with English subtitles but the USA region 1 version comes with an English dub for people like me who don't have very good eyesight.
It's just a shame most French horror films don't come with an English dub, as I for one would buy more of them.
They do seem to have a knack of making superior horror movies compared to our own language horror films. Martyrs and Frontiers to name just 2 more.
